Despite morning rains that drenched walkers, Florence Habitat for Humanity’s September 19 BeachWalk 2009 is closing in on $30,000 in donations toward new affordable housing.
BeachWalk Chairman Kathy Lenox said contributions continue to come in, and the $32,000 goal for 2009 “is in sight.”
Ford Family Foundation has promised $25,000 in matching funds to Florence Habitat if BeachWalk 2009 brings in $31,250.
Several hundred walkers braved the rain and then enjoyed the afternoon barbecue and concert.
Anyone who couldn’t make the BeachWalk can still contribute and help toward the goal for the Ford Foundation grant.
“We still have several of the beautiful cabernet colored BeachWalk t-shirts in large and extra large sizes that are just right for large and extra large contributions,” Lenox said. A few matching doggie bandanas are available for $3 each. All contributions stay in Florence for purchasing building materials and services from local businesses so that volunteers can build affordable housing.
The sun came out that afternoon and Habitat for Humanity BeachWalk 2009 wound up with a four-hour barbecue and concert at Wakonda Brewery tasting room and Coastal Hearth and Home. Frank Wells’ Kush Band, which opened the entertainment was accompanied by Marty Adams’ band Everyday People, which closed out the show. Grocery Outlet donated hot dogs; 3 Rivers Casino served up their award winning chowder; Oregon Fast.net served ice cream and there were grilled oysters courtesy of Dr. Hodulik. It was a great event enjoyed by all who braved the weather!
